To be sure, determining the right size walking stick or can be a subjective art form. What feels right for one person may feel horrible for another. However, with almost two decades of experience in making handcrafted, wooden walking sticks and canes, you can be sure that we have some opinions on the matter!

Walking Sticks

  • For small children and shorter adults, we generally recommend a 41-inch stick.
  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a 48-inch stick.
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 5’11”, we recommend a 55-inch stick.
  • For adults over 5’11”, we recommend a 58-inch stick.

Walking Canes

  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a our lighter 34-inch canes
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 6’, we recommend our standard 37-inch canes as the best starting point.
  • For adults over 6’, we offer 40-inch canes.

Cane sizing is best achieved by standing up nice and straight, relaxing your arm naturally to the side, and having someone measure the distance from your wrist to the floor.

Again, let me reiterate, the sizing recommendations listed above are only suggestions. For people needing step-by-step support, it’s best to consult your doctor or another medical professional about your exact sizing needs.

This is a very durable and comfortable walking stick. I ordered mine with the Brazos Brass Spike, and it works perfect on the hard packed trails we have around here. Their customer service was great to work with as well.

Free Form Hickory Walking stick 58 inch

I have owned this stick for about 10 years as a hiking stick. More recently, I had knee surgery. The physical therapy people issued me a walker, which I ditched in favor of my hickory waalking stick. The PT people were so impressed by how I could get around with it, they canceled the rest of my PT program. Everyone on the hospital staff admired my hickory stick, and asked where they can be obtained. The extra length of this stick makes it particularly useful on stairs.

    Great looking and sturdy

Posted by Unknown on 7th Nov 2018

I wanted a walking stick that was light enough to want to carry on long hikes, but also strong and with some character. The Free Form Hickory Walking stick looked to fit the bill and it didn't disappoint. It is a great looking stick, rustic and natual yet refined and almost artistic. I was surprised at how light it was considering this was described as one of the "heavier" ones they sell. And being a large guy, the stability and durability was the whole point. Great stick on all fronts.. The only reason to buy another one is because your spouse keeps "borrowing" yours.

Thank you Ethan Mulkey. A fine job you did. Never had a stick before and tried it out today for the first time. I have been fighting reality of neuropathy in my legs affecting my balance. So this stick makes walk/hiking safe and pleasurable.

Stopped a Cane Corso dog from attacking

Posted by LollieS on 4th Aug 2018

This stick is super strong. While out walking my golden retriever, a woman lost control of her Cane Corso dog.(Look up Cane Corso aka Italian Mastiff. It's a 100# + beast!) It lunged and tried to attack my dog. At the last second, I hit the attacking dog over the head with my hickory walking stick, and stopped it in it's tracks! I'm a 5'4" woman. My Brazos walking stick became the great equalizer. Saved me and my dog! Worth it's weight in gold!
