To be sure, determining the right size walking stick or can be a subjective art form. What feels right for one person may feel horrible for another. However, with almost two decades of experience in making handcrafted, wooden walking sticks and canes, you can be sure that we have some opinions on the matter!

Walking Sticks

  • For small children and shorter adults, we generally recommend a 41-inch stick.
  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a 48-inch stick.
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 5’11”, we recommend a 55-inch stick.
  • For adults over 5’11”, we recommend a 58-inch stick.

Walking Canes

  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a our lighter 34-inch canes
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 6’, we recommend our standard 37-inch canes as the best starting point.
  • For adults over 6’, we offer 40-inch canes.

Cane sizing is best achieved by standing up nice and straight, relaxing your arm naturally to the side, and having someone measure the distance from your wrist to the floor.

Again, let me reiterate, the sizing recommendations listed above are only suggestions. For people needing step-by-step support, it’s best to consult your doctor or another medical professional about your exact sizing needs.

    Better than I expected!

I loved the look of this stick when ordering and was not disappointed. I ordered the 55" stick and had to cut down about 4 inches but it was so easy and I was happy that I could customize the size to my liking.

    Perfect

I ordered my stick unfinished (no varnish). Contact with the company was pleasant and very quick. I love it. The stick came in a shipping tube, very secure and sturdy. I had heard that hawthorn was a 'heavier' wood, but it doesn't feel heavy in my hands. Nice leather lanyard. Came with a removable (in my case) rubber ferrule. I highly recommend Brazos to anyone looking for a stick or cane.

    Hawthorne walking stick

I have used this stick for several months. I have not been to town a single time that someone did not compliment my stick. Previously I used a cane. It kept me balanced yet hurt my back. The stick keeps me more upright and allows me to be out and about for extended periods as I tire less quickly. I have carried my stick on airplanes without problem. It must be stowed in overhead bin but that is easy. Easiest 5 star rating I have ever given. Was offered twice what it cost but I like THIS stick. May order another Hawthorne stick just in case I lose or need to sell one. If you read this and are undecided please get one. You will be glad you did. And I suspect you can make a profit on resale if you were so inclined. Happy Trails y’all.

The stick was fine, and it arrived fairly quickly. But - there was NO explanation/ description of the various accessories that could be purchased as add-ons. Some, ok, like the monogram, maybe didn't need explanation...but those different end-caps surely did! There was no definition of how they were supposed to be used, on what surface, etc, or if they were removable and/or interchangeable. And then, the company's solution for a tip you didn't like?? Saw it off!? What ??!! Where?? How much?? How far does the tip extend into the shaft?? Will I damage my saw if I cut in the wrong place?? Really, this is the best you can do??

Love them! I got 2 because I couldn't get up or walk for 4 months without poles. I am down to one now for strength & balance. I like the Hawthorne because it's strong but light. I'm a woman but have big hands, I need something substantiail to grasp. Ehan Mulkey was the person who handcrafted my walking sticks & engraved them lovely too. Very nice job!

    Hawthorn free form walking stick

I added a 58" Hawthorn to my walking/hiking stick collection and am sure glad I did. Wow, what a cool stick. It has a slightly larger diameter than my other Brazos sticks, which feels great in the grip - very substantial and hand-filling. The wood is light in weight but solid and strong, kind of like the Aspen. The main thing about the Hawthorn is how cool it looks. Mine has super-interesting patterns where branches grew out of it or were torn off - the whole stick is filled with interesting patterns. The underlying wood which you see where the branches are torn off is yellow, not beige/white, so it's kind of striking and different looking than other sticks. Honestly, I bought it just to have it but wasn't really planning to use it much, as I generally like to walk with a hickory stick, but I find myself reaching for this one frequently, since it feels great in the hand. It gets a lot of positive feedback from passers-by due to its striking appearance.
