Brazos™ Extra Size Free Form Oak Hitchhiker Handcrafted Wood Walking Stick Hiking Trekking Pole

Our Extra Size Hitchhiker Walking Stick is handcrafted from a solid piece of oak, making it a strong walking companion. While not a heavy stick, it’s robust, making it an ideal staff for hard-core hikers who tend to put their walking sticks through strenuous conditions. Each staff is beautifully stained, magnifying the wood's beautiful grain patterns. Every stick is sprayed with a protective clear coat lacquer. The result is a smooth finish that highlights the wood's intrinsic beauty. The finished staff is a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted walking stick that is both sturdy and attractive. The Extra Size Hitchhiker Walking Stick comes with a standard rubber tip for a firm, secure grip on virtually any surface. Like all of our finely crafted walking sticks and canes, the Hitchhiker Walking Stick is made in the USA by our skilled craftsmen using the highest quality wood and time-tested methods.

Made in America, One at a Time

Unlike sterile, lifeless metal canes and poles, Brazos walking sticks offer natural appeal because they are made from real wood. You can see the fine detail and beauty of the actual tree when you look at one. Each stick is a work of art and no two are exactly alike. Brazos Walking Sticks is family operated and located in the beautiful Brazos River Valley of Central Texas. Each walking stick is handcrafted by skilled local craftsmen.

Make it Uniquely Yours

All our canes can be personalized with laser engraving, making them uniquely yours. Canes can be further customized with accessories listed above, per your choice.

To be sure, determining the right size walking stick or can be a subjective art form. What feels right for one person may feel horrible for another. However, with almost two decades of experience in making handcrafted, wooden walking sticks and canes, you can be sure that we have some opinions on the matter!

Walking Sticks

  • For small children and shorter adults, we generally recommend a 41-inch stick.
  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a 48-inch stick.
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 5’11”, we recommend a 55-inch stick.
  • For adults over 5’11”, we recommend a 58-inch stick.

Walking Canes

  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a our lighter 34-inch canes
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 6’, we recommend our standard 37-inch canes as the best starting point.
  • For adults over 6’, we offer 40-inch canes.

Cane sizing is best achieved by standing up nice and straight, relaxing your arm naturally to the side, and having someone measure the distance from your wrist to the floor.

Again, let me reiterate, the sizing recommendations listed above are only suggestions. For people needing step-by-step support, it’s best to consult your doctor or another medical professional about your exact sizing needs.

    Gate Keepers Staff

Posted by SWD on 11th Apr 2016

I have eight Brazos Walking Sticks. This is one of them. Very robust in appearance and weight. Craftsmanship is top-notch. If you desire a Gate Keepers type of stick and something to pass to another generation this is one. Not for persons who are concerned with keeping things light in weight. Get it engraved. It is worth it in looks and security because someone will want to snatch this stick if you are not careful.

I purchased this walking staff for use as a martial arts weapon, for an Hapkido walking staff form. It is perfect for this purpose. So glad I discovered this product after much web research.

    Not what I ordered

Posted by jean on 14th Oct 2015

What I ordered is not what I received. I ordered the "Extra size hitchhiker oak walking stick". I received a "hitchhiker twisted oak walking stick". I haven't complain, too lazy I guess. The stick is okay, nice quality.

    Wumped wid an ugly stick!""

Nicely finished but too heavy & unattractive. Qualifiers: Purpose probably makes the difference. This stick is like lifting about 3 lb weight for every step you take. (In it's mailing tube, USPS weighed it at 4 lbs) For a hiker in robust shape, one who might not think anything of the weight, this stick might be just the thing, especially if s/he likes the appearance: see below for description. For a non-hiking person who does not need something to help bear weight, but an everyday aid to balance that encourages upright posture, a light weight walking stick is wonderful. As long as it it is as tall or taller than shoulder height, greater height does not matter. If it is also attractive, it calls attention away from the health concern for which it is being used. This makes it easier for a person, self conscious about being seen as weak or crippled, to decide to use it with regularity. I purchased this stick for someone with those needs. It's appearance did not match our taste. The merchant's photos did not show enough detail to know in advance that it would be heavily sprinkled with yellow polka dots where side branches had been shaved off + many bluish-black areas that look like the spider veins and bruises that are often seen on the skin of elderly people. As beauty is definitely in the eyes of the beholder, I concede that to some, these very features might make it seem a work of fine art, just not to us. A word of caution: return shipping cost: I made the mistake of ordering it without knowing it's weight or having a clear idea of it's appearance. I wrongly assumed for the price of the postage quoted at checkout, $5.49, I would be able to return it if it wasn't suitable. At that price the risk seemed manageable. When I took it, packaged for return in its original shipping tube, to UPS, I found the return shipping cost to be $31.68! The least expensive return shipping was at USPS for a whopping $16.57. Lesson learned and passed on to you!
