To be sure, determining the right size walking stick or can be a subjective art form. What feels right for one person may feel horrible for another. However, with almost two decades of experience in making handcrafted, wooden walking sticks and canes, you can be sure that we have some opinions on the matter!

Walking Sticks

  • For small children and shorter adults, we generally recommend a 41-inch stick.
  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a 48-inch stick.
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 5’11”, we recommend a 55-inch stick.
  • For adults over 5’11”, we recommend a 58-inch stick.

Walking Canes

  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a our lighter 34-inch canes
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 6’, we recommend our standard 37-inch canes as the best starting point.
  • For adults over 6’, we offer 40-inch canes.

Cane sizing is best achieved by standing up nice and straight, relaxing your arm naturally to the side, and having someone measure the distance from your wrist to the floor.

Again, let me reiterate, the sizing recommendations listed above are only suggestions. For people needing step-by-step support, it’s best to consult your doctor or another medical professional about your exact sizing needs.

In a few words, please title your review

Posted by Kathy Diamond Davis on 25th Oct 2013

I have had rheumatoid arthritis for a lot of years, and have many damaged and inflamed joints. I also have respiratory allergies that, among a lot of other things, severely affect my balance through middle ear damage. I recently learned that with a walking staff I stand up straighter when I walk. That makes my asthma better, because it straightens the airway and opens it better.

I have learned that a lot of the time I need to use two staffs. So I need plenty of them around the house, to always be able to get to one or two quickly and without too many risky steps.

I'm a Christian, which makes the shepherd's crook special to me. I also have a dog who takes guidance from a staff with great humor! I never hit him with it, just use it to show direction.

I was so glad to see this shepherd's staff here. When it arrived, it is wonderfully made and gorgeous! I'm so glad to have it.

I need a tall cane, the 41" staff is perfect for that. Solid oak, 1 inch diameter shaft--it is strong. I love it.

    Great walking stick

Posted by LarnLor on 13th Dec 2012

We bought 2 of these sticks in the 58" and they are great. We like to hike and go geocaching and these are the greatest. I got the Lee Valley Spike on both sticks and they work great for traction. The quality of the stick and spike are well worth the price. We bought 2 more for our son and his wife for Christmas so we can all hike together. Thanks Brazos!
