When finished, each Free Form Sweet Gum Walking Stick is sprayed with a protective, clear coat lacquer, bringing out the wood's natural beauty. Like all of our handcrafted products, the Free Form Sweet Gum Walking Stick is made in the USA by our skilled craftsmen using the highest quality materials and time-tested methods.

Made in America, One at a Time

Unlike sterile, lifeless metal canes and poles, Brazos walking canes offer natural appeal because they are made from real wood. You can see the fine detail and beauty of the actual tree when you look at one. Each cane is a work of art. Plus, because they are solid wood, there are no moving parts to become unstable. Brazos Walking Sticks is family operated and located in the beautiful Brazos River Valley of Central Texas. Each walking stick is handcrafted by skilled local craftsmen.

To be sure, determining the right size walking stick or can be a subjective art form. What feels right for one person may feel horrible for another. However, with almost two decades of experience in making handcrafted, wooden walking sticks and canes, you can be sure that we have some opinions on the matter!

Walking Sticks

  • For small children and shorter adults, we generally recommend a 41-inch stick.
  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a 48-inch stick.
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 5’11”, we recommend a 55-inch stick.
  • For adults over 5’11”, we recommend a 58-inch stick.

Walking Canes

  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a our lighter 34-inch canes
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 6’, we recommend our standard 37-inch canes as the best starting point.
  • For adults over 6’, we offer 40-inch canes.

Cane sizing is best achieved by standing up nice and straight, relaxing your arm naturally to the side, and having someone measure the distance from your wrist to the floor.

Again, let me reiterate, the sizing recommendations listed above are only suggestions. For people needing step-by-step support, it’s best to consult your doctor or another medical professional about your exact sizing needs.

    Gorgeous walking stick

Posted by SC on 20th Apr 2017

Bought 1 sweet gum and 1 ash sticks. 1 will be a gift and another is for myself. The ash definitely appears stronger, though it is a tiny bit heavier. I prefer a nice walking stick when I go backpacking over trekking poles. I think trekking poles are lame! I have had a Bravos Ironwood walking stick for about a year now, it's near indestructible but very heavy. I will use it for shorter tasks, or whever I feel like I might have to battle a bear.

In a few words, please title your review

I'd given her a sumac walking stick from another source (a little shorter than this one) which she loved but had lost. This one arrived at her home as I'd expected from reviews... great packaging and within a week or so. Her only concern is that it's not "finished" on the bottom half (she worked in quality furniture factory once), but is pleased with it otherwise. Lightweight yet provides great balance aid for her through house and in her garden.

    Nice!

This stick is a little bit thinner than my other two (hickory & sassafras), but quite adequate for my size & needs. It is a very smooth finish which feels good to the hand. It is my new favorite for walks around the rural roads in my neighborhood.

Purchased this as a gift for my fiancé, who was an avid hiker prior to being diagnosed with MS. He still loves walking sticks, and loves to use them as an artistic statement as well as a balance aid! Can't wait to see his face!!

Love my new sweet gum stick

Posted by John Stuebe on 21st Jun 2012

Purchased my free form sweet gum 55" stick in preparation for some North Carolina Blueridge hiking. This stick was perfect for my needs and performed great. It is a really good looking piece with a smooth comfortable finish that does not take away from the natural wood. It is very sturdy and held up with confidence to my 5'10" 240LB frame. Several times I supported much of my weight on the stick and had no fear doing so even though the stick itself has a very pleasing light weight. The standard rubber ferrule was completely adequate for my needs. The ferrule base really gripped both wet and dry rocks with confidence and the round rubber edges held in both hard packed and loose soil. I did manage to cut my ferrule on some rocks(necssitating a quick shoe goop repair) so I would recommend ordering a spare ferrule. I love my new stick and hope to have it along time. My wife uses a Brazos 48" free form dogwood stick that she loves as well, but I dont think her's is as sweet as mine. Just don't tell her that!
