To be sure, determining the right size walking stick or can be a subjective art form. What feels right for one person may feel horrible for another. However, with almost two decades of experience in making handcrafted, wooden walking sticks and canes, you can be sure that we have some opinions on the matter!

Walking Sticks

  • For small children and shorter adults, we generally recommend a 41-inch stick.
  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a 48-inch stick.
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 5’11”, we recommend a 55-inch stick.
  • For adults over 5’11”, we recommend a 58-inch stick.

Walking Canes

  • For people who are shorter than 5’4″, we recommend a our lighter 34-inch canes
  • For people who are between 5’4″ and 6’, we recommend our standard 37-inch canes as the best starting point.
  • For adults over 6’, we offer 40-inch canes.

Cane sizing is best achieved by standing up nice and straight, relaxing your arm naturally to the side, and having someone measure the distance from your wrist to the floor.

Again, let me reiterate, the sizing recommendations listed above are only suggestions. For people needing step-by-step support, it’s best to consult your doctor or another medical professional about your exact sizing needs.

    Don't leave home without it

Posted by Gerald Dupree on 10th Feb 2017

I lost the walking stick I had, so I ordered this one. It is great for helping to walk on uneven surfaces such as logs or rocks, plus I always poke around for snakes before stepping over logs or rocks. It has helped me if I stumble such as stepping into an animal burrow such as ground squirrels, etc. Helps in soft sand, as well as obstacles on trails.

    Just what I needed

Posted by Mike M on 10th Feb 2017

My wife wanted a walking staff so I ordered her a 55" from a distributor or Brazos, we both loved it when it arrived. The staff was sized perfect for her being 5'4'' but too short for me. I am 6'2'' so I ordered the 58" direct form Brazos. It shipped quickly and was as equally beautiful and expertly crafted as the 55". Seems like it is SUPER strong as it is a very thick circumference. Highly recommended.

    we ordered 2

Posted by Unknown on 28th Jan 2017

I ordered two of these of various hights. The larger/taller of the two was thicker stronger and seemed sturdy. There wasn't much give at all. I think it will hold up just fine. It wasn't however very straight towards the bottom. The short one I ordered for myself was thin wood with lots of give. It bent without much force. Feels like it would snap in half. Does not feel sturdy like the taller stick I bought for my husband. However it is nice and straight. They both look nice and rustic. I'm not completely satisfied with this purchase but I have decided to keep them both and hope for the best. I hope mine holds up better than I think it will. We will be going on vacation and going on a lot of trails with these soon. I sure hope these serve us well. If not I hope the company stands behind there products. 4 stars for now. I wish I could rate 3.5. Seemed overpriced.

The stain turned out very well and the free-form style added character- looked beautiful. It also seemed like it wouldn't be too much of a burden to carry along on longer trails, though it hasn't been tested yet.
I ordered this five days before Christmas, with an added compass and engraving, and it was shipped the next day! It made a great Christmas gift for someone who loves hiking and being outdoors.

    Great Christmas Gift

Posted by Unknown on 3rd Jan 2017

I bought this walking stick for my husband for Christmas. We went on our first hike of the New Year and he used the stick and loved it. Said it was the perfect height and helped him as he has a touch of diabetic neuropathy.

I ordered this as a gift for my dad and it came out beautifully! It's of great quality and is the perfect weight - not too light or too heavy. I also added an engraved inscription and it's perfect!

Loved the stick's overall weight and form. Feels both easy and sturdy when hiking. Took it for two hikes and feel very good about it.

    My second free form hickory

Posted by steve tracy on 2nd Nov 2016

This is the second free form hickory stick I have purchased from Brazos. My first one went to a friend who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's. He has become very unstable when moving, so I gave him my hickory. My only complaint with the stick is that it is a little smaller in circumference than some of my other sticks. This causes problems because of the weakness in my hands. My wife has solved that problem by wrapping a paracord hand grip on the stick. In my opinion, it is even better looking and is easier to grip. I cannot begin to tell you how thankful I am to you for my sticks. I now have five and love them all.
