We carry a wide variety of handmade walking canes. Each cane is individually made from the finest woods including sassafras, hickory, sweet gum, iron bamboo, and many other exotic and native trees. Each walking cane is handcrafted by our artisan craftsmen in Central Texas not far from the Brazos River. Most of our custom walking cane blanks are naturally harvested in the nearby woods of East Texas, Arkansas, and western Louisiana. Before each custom cane is created the raw wood blank is carefully inspected for hidden flaws that might affect the structural integrity of the custom walking cane. Only the raw blanks that show the highest strength are chosen for use in our walking canes for women and men. After the structural inspection, the raw wood blank is shaped on a lathe or a sander depending on the style of the cane. The cane handle is constructed next. Many of our models use a mortise and tenon handle construction. A mortise -- a rectangle shaped hole -- is cut with precision care into the handle. Then a matching tenon is shaped on the top of the cane shaft. The two pieces are trial fitted together; the tenon is adjusted until the fit is perfect. The mortise and tenon joint is then glued. A mortise and tenon joint is very time consuming to make, but the resulting joint is extremely strong and durable. After the glue has set, the tenoon excess is trimmed back to the handle. The whole piece receives a shaping and sanding. Once sanded, the custom cane is ready for the finish. Depending on the style of cane, a clear or tinted finish is applied.
